Commentaires/anecdotes sur ce disque : Edwin Hawkins est un pianiste et chef de chorale américain né le 18 aout 1943 à Oakland en Californie. Il grandit dans un famille de musiciens, la Hawkins Family, et c’est à l’âge de 5 ans qu’il commence à apprendre le piano. En 1957, ils enregistrent un premier album. A 24 ans, Edwin fonde avec la chanteuse Betty Watson, le Northern California State Youth Choir, une chorale de plus de 50 membres. Le groupe sort un premier album « Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord » qui comprend une version très innovante du classique gospel « Oh Happy Day » arrangé comme un titre r&b. Le single se vend à plus de 7 millions d’exemplaires dans le monde et impose Edwin comme l’un des fondateurs du gospel contemporain et urbain.
